What is Basic Research (BR)? Basic research is driven by the interest of the scientist. This research is theory-driven, and it is not designed to answer any specific question but rather the goal is to expand knowledge in a specific field of study. The ancient Greek Scientists wanted to understand the composition of matter. What is matter made of ?  What is earth? What is air? What is water?, etc. However, the knowledge obtained form this debate was not meant to apply to or answer specific question. They wanted to understand the nature of matter. So Basic Research is curosity or interest-driven. In fact, Basic Research laid the foundation for Applied Research.

The purpose of Applied Research (AR) is to provide answer to a specific problem. Existing knowledge is use as a foundation for improvement in new product designs and to take products to markets.
